Metal Parts Replacement and Metal to Plastic Coversions can be achieved with the use of high performance plastic materials.

Plastic to metal conversions and metal part replacement applications are areas of expertise at Performance Plastics. We have developed many successful metal to plastic components as highlighted below. High performance plastics have replaced metal in a number of critical applications. In fact, there are advanced plastic materials that have a higher specific strength than some light metals! Metal parts replacement and plastic to metal conversions can provide lower cost and provide many other performance benefits as well.  PEEK, for example performs better in steam than stainless steel!

We have developed successful solutions for Single Component Replacement as well as Multiple Part Projects.

Low Pressure sealing performance is critical to the functionality of this PEEK™ poppet. This componet replaced 2 metal parts and significantly reduced re-work, offering tremendous cost savings.

Strength: This surgical head restraint system was converted from titanium to PEEK™. The plastic allows for accurate MRI imaging without interference from a metal assembly.

Metal to Plastic and Metal Parts Replacement Applications with High Performance Plastics

Chemical Resistance: In highly corrosive atmospheres and chemical environments, high performance polymers are corrosion resistant in places metals fail. PTFE is better than exotic metal alloys.

Strength and Impact Resistance: Glass or carbon reinforced plastics perform well even in high strength / tensile applications.  PPS can even outperform titanium in some applications.

Friction and Wear Resistance: Plastics can offer excellent wear resistance coupled with a low coefficient of friction. Plastics can out perform metals in many aggressive environments. We have developed and worked with many plastic material formulations to provide outstanding friction and wear performance.

Low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: Plastics can match the CTE of steel and aluminum.

Eliminate Secondary Machining Operations: Molded plastic parts can provide outstanding sealing surfaces for poppets and seal componets as well as provide excellent wear surfaces without costly secondary machining operations.

Hydrolysis and Moisture Resistance: There are plastics that can retain mechanical properties and dimensional stability when exposed to water or steam at elevated temperatures and pressure.

Part Count and Cost Reduction: Designers will appreciate the complex shapes that can be easily molded allowing them to combine parts and reduce piece counts.  This added versatility will reduce costs.

Performance Plastics will help you design and develop the most cost effective functional parts. We can even work on multiple parts making up an entire product.  To get started, CONTACT US, and we will work with you to select the best high performance polymer for your application.
