Ryton® or Fortron® - PPS - Polyphenylene sulfide

PPS, polyphenylene sulfide (Ryton® by Chevron Phillips Chemical Company, Fortron® by Ticona) is the oldest material in the high performance, injection-moldable category.

Non-filled grades are used exclusively as coatings. With the addition of glass and carbon fibers, minerals, and PTFE fillers, PPS becomes a very suitable molding material. Initially, PPS was promoted as a replacement for thermosetting materials.

While no known solvents attack PPS, strong reducing agents will attack the material, and high temperature water will act as a solvent on the binder which bonds glass-fiber to the polymer (some grades).

PPS is generally used in applications where high temperature and chemical resistance are required. A continuous use temperature of 428 degrees F and short term properties at 500 degrees F allow PPS to be used in automotive, electronic (solderability), and may OEM applications.

PPS materials are inherently V-O due to an oxygen index of 47 or higher.
