This is a summary of the properties of the most popular high performance plastics. These materials perform well at much higher temperatures than most, are stronger, have important characteristics such as chemical resistance, and some are fire retardant.  Be sure to click on the charts for a graphic display of the material properties.  For more details, please CONTACT US at Performance Plastics!

  • PEEK is a semi-crystalline, linear, wholly aromatic thermoplastic. It has excellent thermal stability, offers outstanding mechanical performance at high temperatures and is resistant to a wide range of chemicals and superheated water. PEEK has been used very successfully in many metal replacement applications.

  • PEI, Ultem is an amorphous material with exceptional strength and rigidity under long term heat exposure. It has excellent impact strength, flame resistance and generates very low levels of smoke. PEI also has excellent hydrolytic stability, and is well suited for repeated steam sterilization. These properties are very useful for applications requiring tight tolerances and low warp.

  • PFA and FEP are fluoropolymers that can be injection molded, providing tremendous cost savings - especially when incorporating hot runner systems - over conventionally processed PTFE fluoropolymer components.  They operate well at high temperature, have exceptional resistance to most organic compounds, have a very low coefficient of friction - lower than almost any other material, and have a high resistance to flammability.

  • PPS, trade names Ryton and Fortron, is a crystalline polymer that has outstanding heat resistance, chemical resistance and dimensional stability. It exhibits good mechanical properties and toughness at elevated temperatures. These properties make PPS well suited as a replacement material for thermosetting phenolic resins.  These materials have also been used very sucessfully in metal replacement applications.
  • PI, Aurum, has outstanding bearing and wear properties. It has high load/low friction properties well suited for many high temperature friction and wear applications. Aurum® was originally developed by NASA.
  • PAI, Torlon®, has the highest tensile strength of all non-filled, injection moldable materials. It also has excellent bearing properties and exhibits outstanding wear performance at elevated temperatures.
