Stick-Slip is a common problem in friction and wear applications. This situation can be even more difficult to solve in dry applications where no lubricant is allowed or desired.
Selecting the right material is critical. Just as important is selecting the right additives. Our expertise in this area can help you develop a solution quickly and bring your product to the marketplace faster. Low friction components can also help you reduce overall system costs.
For example, we worked with our customer in the development of the gear component shown to the right. Performance Plastics developed a unique PEEK blend with additives to provide lubricity and reduced friciton at start-up - with no break-in period required.
This allowed our customer to reduce the size of the motor required for the application. As a result, the customer was able to meet the target price point, and offer a very cost effective product to the marketplace.
Performance Plastics also helped NASCAR racers with a distributor gear molded from a specially formulated PEEK resin. Brass gears wore during the race, creating backlash that robbed drivers of horsepower. Peformance Plastics helped develop a PEEK gear that showed no signs of wear after multiple races, significantly outperforming the metal gear.
Friction and Wear performance is an area of special expertise within Performance Plastics. We have developed solutions for many of our customers through the addition of additives such as carbon fiber, glass, graphite, PTFE, PFPE oil, and other materials to enhance the friction and wear properties of high performance materials. The selection of additives is critical, especially in harsh environments. Other critical factors include the loads and relative velocities of the interfacing components. Together we can develop the solution that is right for you.
