FLUOROPOLYMERS
Fluoropolymer molding ( PFA, FEP, and ETFE as well as other commercially available fluoropolymer resins) is an area of special expertise for Performance Plastics. We have successfully launched a number of 8 cavity high volume fluoropolymer molds with hot runner systems to produce critical PFA / FEP / ETFE parts for the medical, computer printer, and semiconductor industries.
We have done considerable research and development that has allowed us to be one of the few injection molders in the world that can point to successful implementation of fluoropolymer hot runner molding in multi-cavity applications. Our success comes from expertise in three critical areas (click here to learn more about factors critical to success in fluoropolymer molding):
- Hot runner system component design
- Specially formulated tool steels
- Sophisticated processing techniques
PFA Components– For cutting edge medical application. Parts are molded in an 8 cavity tool with a 16 drop hot runner system.
We have proven success in fluoropolymer injection molding with hot runner systems for the following industries:
Computer printers – rollers, paper detacks
Medical – tissue preparation components
Medical Devices – pacemaker batteries
Semi-conductor Industry – fluid dispensing components

Hot Runner Molding

PFA Computer Printer Rollers - molded in an 8 cavity tool with a hot runner system. Performance Plastics molds millions of these parts per year.
Fluoropolymer molding with hot runner systems provides several advantages over conventional molding techniques:
PTFE is not injection moldable, but several grades within the fluoropolymer family that have similar characteristics can be injection molded. Components currently machined from PTFE tube, PTFE rod, or PTFE strip might be candidates for cost reduction with fluoropolymer molding techniques. Net shape or near net shape parts can be injection molded in a number of fluoropolymer resins, eliminating or significantly reducing machining operations, providing huge cost savings.
This battery cap for a pacemaker, molded in FEP , has no weld lines and features a 0.022” hole.

Performance Plastics provides molding solutions in PEEK™, Torlon™, Aurum™, Ultem™, Fluoropolymers, PPA, PPS and other high performance resins.
