Goals: Design and develop 3 new components for next generation computer printer. Get product to market quickly to capture increased market share and optimize profitablity of product line.

Problem: The customer's design team is in the USA, but their manufacturing location is in China. Previous development projects did not meet market windows due to language barriers as well as coordination and logistical issues due to the great distance between the two departments. The need for customer's design engineers to travel to China for design review and program management added significant cost. Overall, this business model was not cost-effective.

Solution: Performance Plastics worked closely with the customer throughout the design and develoment phase of the project. Performance Plastics engineers were able to meet face-to-face with the customer's design team in the U.S. and clearly understand all of their technical and commercial requirements. Performance Plastics then took responsibility for tool design, sampling, modifications, and verification of tool performance. Performance Plastics became an extention of the customer's engineering staff, providing technical expertise and resources throughout the entire design and development phase.

Results: Working with Performance Plastics reduced product development time from 24 weeks to 8 weeks, with complete design and performance verification on 3 tools. Customer was able to meet the market window for product launch, increasing market share and total sales revenue. In addition, customer realized significant cost savings while reducing lost productivity due to travel time. The overall Return on Investment represented a huge success for the customer, and presented a new business model for future product development programs.
